Tenwek's Chief of Surgery

The heart and soul of Tenwek Hospital as well as the glue that holds it all together on a daily basis is Dr. Russ, the Tenwek Chief of Surgery. He and his family have been an integral part of Tenwek Hospital now for over 10 years. He is a very unassuming man and a talented surgeon who has accomplished great things at Tenwek. He and his family were perfect hosts to our group and made us instantly feel at home during our cardiac week at Tenwek Hospital.

Our first night at Tenwek Hospital was spent at his home so he could meet our group and give us a better feel for the hospital and what to expect during our stay there. During another evening, just before we left for our 3 day safari, he hosted a movie night at his home so he could show us the movie "GHOSTS IN THE DARKNESS". It's a movie filmed in Africa about killer lions. Just what we needed to see prior to going on safari! Check it out sometime, it's a great flick.

My favorite night at his home was the evening he shared a lecture with us that he presented at Brown University on strange and unusual medical procedures that he's done in Kenya. Some of the stories (and slides) were simply unbelievable. Of course I have photos of some of his incredible slides... so stay tuned for future posts to hear (and see) all about them!

It was a pleasure and an honor to work alongside Dr. Russ and to be a part of Tenwek history during the first-ever open heart surgeries performed at Tenwek Hospital last November.
